At Resuscitation Australia, the heart of our Advanced Life Support (ALS) course design lies in delivering exceptional education that empowers healthcare professionals with critical, life-saving skills.
Gaining post-course participant feedback is a cornerstone of our commitment to excellence. Hearing directly from those who complete our courses allows us to continuously refine and enhance our programs to meet the highest standards of ALS education and training.
Feedback from two recent ALS Level 1 courses, held at Canberra Hospital on 18 November 2024, underscores the strength of our program and highlights the pivotal role played by our accredited Resuscitation Australia ALS instructors.
Allison Jordan: Delivering Excellence in ALS Education
Allison Jordan, an experienced and dedicated ALS instructor, led the ALS1 course and in the post-course evaluation, received unanimous praise from participants. With her approachable demeanour and ability to tailor examples to practical workplace-specific clinical scenarios, 100% of participants felt strongly that Allison had created a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Participants commended her coaching style, leaving excellent feedback such as:
– “Very approachable, clear, and kept the pace appropriate for all members.”
– “Very practical and knowledgeable assessor – I felt confident by the end of the course!”
We asked Allison about her experience teaching on the Resuscitation Australia ALS course for the first time. She shared:
“It was an incredible opportunity to bring my professional experience into the classroom and see participants grow in confidence as they mastered critical skills. The continuous assessment approach really helped create a relaxed, supportive environment, which I think made a big difference to their learning outcomes.”
Reflecting on the blended learning approach, Allison added:
“I found that the eLearning modules laid a great foundation. By the time participants arrived for the face-to-face training day, they were already well-prepared, which allowed us to focus on practical scenarios and hands-on learning.”
Teaching Within a Blended Learning Approach
A key attribute of the RA ALS courses is that of blended learning. In the survey, participants unanimously agreed on the effectiveness of this mixed-mode delivery. Combining self-paced eLearning modules with face-to-face training provided flexibility and comprehensive preparation, ensuring that learners were equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The ALS1 training day – a session of four hours – emerged as a key strength of the program, receiving a 100% excellent rating. Participants praised the well-paced structure, practical exercises, and relevance to workplace scenarios. The inclusive environment fostered by Allison allowed everyone to practice varied roles, making the day highly impactful. On this occasion, Allison facilitated two ALS1 courses on the same day – with one session in the morning, and another in the afternoon.
Overall Course Experience
The overwhelming majority of participants rated their overall experience as excellent, frequently describing the course as practical, engaging, and highly recommendable. The continuous assessment approach integrated seamlessly into the program and was widely praised. By embedding evaluation throughout the course, stress associated with traditional exams was significantly reduced. With 80% rating it as very effective and 90% noting they had ample opportunities to demonstrate their practical skills, the assessment method is clearly a highlight of the course. This feedback not only reflects the quality of the curriculum but also the expertise of instructors like Allison Jordan.
Looking Ahead
Allison’s exceptional performance exemplifies the dedication of our ALS instructors, whose expertise and passion drive the success of our programs. We are proud to have educators like Allison leading the way in Advanced Life Support education.
