Embracing Blended Learning for Advanced Life Support Training

Resuscitation Australia is dedicated to providing the highest quality Advanced Life Support education, informed by the latest research and recommendations from leading authorities in resuscitation science.

In alignment with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) EIT Taskforce recommendations, we have designed a mixed-mode blended learning approach for our Advanced Life Support (ALS) training programs.

The Case for Blended Learning

ILCOR’s EIT Taskforce has extensively reviewed and endorsed blended learning for Advanced Life Support education, citing several key advantages:

  1. Grounded in Educational Theory: Blended learning approaches are supported by robust educational frameworks, ensuring that the teaching methods used are effective and evidence-based.
  2. Superior Educational Outcomes: Research indicates that blended learning results in similar or better outcomes compared to traditional learning methods. Participants benefit from a combination of online and face-to-face instruction, enhancing their understanding and retention of critical life support skills.
  3. Accessibility: Blended learning provides opportunities for continuous education, particularly beneficial for individuals in remote locations or lower resource settings. This approach ensures that life support training is accessible to a wider audience, regardless of geographical or situational constraints.
  4. Consistent Messaging: With blended learning, participants receive consistent and standardised information, which is especially advantageous for pre-course preparation. This consistency helps to ensure that all learners start their face-to-face sessions with a solid foundation of knowledge.
  5. Cost-Effectiveness: Both participants and stakeholders can benefit from reduced costs associated with a blended learning model. Savings are realised through decreased travel expenses and reduced need for extended time away from work.
  6. Reduced Face-to-Face Training Time: While face-to-face training remains a critical component of ALS education, the duration can be shortened through blended learning. Participants complete a portion of their training online, allowing in-person sessions to focus on hands-on practice and assessment.

RA’s Blended Learning Approach

Informed by these recommendations, RA has developed a comprehensive blended learning program for ALS training. Our approach integrates the advantages outlined by ILCOR to provide a flexible, effective, and accessible training solution. Participants engage in online learning modules that cover theoretical aspects of ALS, followed by in-person sessions that emphasise practical skills and real-life application. For ALS1 this looks like an online eLearning component, available immediately on booking the course, followed by a half day face-to-face session with a Resuscitation Australia accredited course centre. For ALS2, this also entails an online eLearning component, followed by a full day face-to-face session.

By adopting a blended learning model, we ensure that our participants receive high-quality, evidence-based education while enjoying the benefits of flexibility and reduced costs. This innovative approach is designed to meet the evolving needs of healthcare professionals and enhance their ability to provide lifesaving care.
