Instructor Accreditation Program (IAP) Approved for CICM CPD Recognition

At Resuscitation Australia, we’re committed to ensuring our programs provide high-quality, evidence-based resuscitation education while also supporting professional development for healthcare providers.

We’re pleased to announce that our Instructor Accreditation Program (IAP) was approved by the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) for CPD purposes on 13 February 2025.

This means that registered intensive care specialists and other healthcare professionals whose scope of practice aligns with intensive care medicine and whose CPD home is CICM can now claim CPD hours for completing the IAP, contributing to their CICM CPD Diary requirements across key categories.

CPD Breakdown for the IAP

The IAP involves a structured training process, including:

1. IAP Course Days: A 2-day face to face course for both ALS1 and ALS2 instructors (16 hours)

2. Instructor Candidate Placements:
ALS1 Instructor – 2 x ALS1 Instructor Candidate Course Placements (8 additional hours) equating to a total 24 CPD hours for ALS1 Instructors.
ALS2 Instructor – 2 x ALS2 Instructor Candidate Course Placements (16 additional hours) equating to a total 32 CPD hours for ALS2 Instructors.

Once accredited, ALS2 Instructors are also authorised to instruct on ALS1 courses.

CPD Categories Covered, as Outlined by CICM

CICM stipulates that a minimum of 50 hours CPD are logged in an individual’s CPD Diary. Activities need to be across three categories, where minimum hours apply. Below we have outlined how this relates to the IAP:

Educational Activities (Minimum 12.5 hours): In relation to the IAP this includes participation in the IAP course and subsequent ALS Instructor Candidate Course Placements.

Reviewing Performance (Minimum 5 hours): In relation to the IAP, Instructor Candidates engage in direct observation and assessment of course participants during placements, contributing to performance review.

We note that the third category, “Measuring Outcomes” does not apply to RA’s IAP, as the program is focused on instructor development rather than direct patient outcomes.

Additionally, the IAP and ALS eLearning content support culturally safe practice and psychologically safe adult learning, aligning with the CICM CPD program’s broader professional requirements.

Enhancing Professional Recognition and CPD Compliance

This recognition by CICM strengthens the professional value of RA’s Instructor Accreditation Program, ensuring that instructors not only contribute to resuscitation education but also meet ongoing CPD obligations for those individuals who have CICM as their CPD home.
