At Resuscitation Australia, we are committed to delivering high-quality, effective, and accessible Advanced Life Support (ALS) training. Our blended learning approach – a combination of pre-course eLearning and face-to-face training – is designed to ensure participants arrive prepared, confident, and ready to fully engage in hands-on resuscitation training.
We describe our ALS courses as mixed mode because it’s not possible to complete just the eLearning or just the face-to-face training: participants are required to do both in order to successfully complete the requirements of our ALS courses.
While there is a level of convenience for participants inherent in the self-paced learning component, this approach reaches far beyond convenience; it’s about maximising learning outcomes and ensuring that every participant gets the most from their ALS training.
The Power of Mixed-Mode Learning
Better Knowledge Retention: Pre-course eLearning allows you to learn at your own pace, revisit key concepts, and arrive at the training day with a strong theoretical foundation.
Hands-On, Scenario-Based Training: Because the theory is covered in advance, the face-to-face session is entirely practical, focusing on real-world application, teamwork, and high-stakes decision-making.
Flexible & Efficient: Mixed-mode learning means you have time to work through the eLearning at your own pace, in your own time, and to absorb and apply knowledge before stepping into high-fidelity simulations.
Leveraging Technology: Allows individuals confident using technology to access learning via digital channels, and to receive digitally encrypted credentials on completion of the course.
This structure is proven to enhance learning engagement, reduce cognitive overload, and improve overall participant confidence and performance.
Your Learning, Your Responsibility
To ensure the highest training standards, all RA ALS participants must complete mandatory eLearning before attending face-to-face training.
This is not simply a formality – it is a cornerstone of effective ALS training. Our Quality Assurance Framework ensures every participant enters their practical training equally prepared for success. You can read more about the importance of this mandatory approach to eLearning here.
Digital Literacy and Course Evaluation
Accessing and completing the eLearning component is an essential part of your ALS course. This requires digital literacy, such as creating an account, logging into a learning portal, navigating course materials, and submitting feedback online forms and accessing digital credentialling.
Course evaluation is also essential and required as a key component of RA’s Participant Code of Conduct. After completing the eLearning modules you will be prompted to submit your feedback online. Additionally, at the conclusion of the face-to-face training, a QR code will direct you to a short evaluation form.
This continuous feedback loop helps us refine and improve our courses, ensuring exceptional learning experiences across all Accredited Course Centres.

What Participants Are Saying
The feedback below has been captured across ALS1 and ALS2 courses in Melbourne, Sydney and Townsville this month. Participants clearly highlight the benefits of a flexible, self-paced approach and the efficiencies of time management amidst participants’ busy schedules:
- “Have done multiple ALS courses in past so having online aspect is v helpful with busy schedule.”
- “This is great as allowed me to progress at my own speed and look things up as needed.”
- “Good because it means you can tailor how much focus to give different sections based on experience.”
- “I found the mixed method very effective and time efficient for regional travel to the educational facility site.”
- “Time is precious and the elearning could be done in the evening or weekend.”
- “I think the theory was done at your own pace in a relaxed home environment and then the practical hands on was very manageable with the 4 hour duration. You had time in between to digest the theory go over some notes then apply the practical skills. A whole day would have been pretty exhausting.”
- “Allows self paced reading comprehension. Good succinct practical session.
- “Easy for shift workers part of course completed prior to course so easier on day and more time to concentrate on practical scenarios.”
Knowledge retention and an impactful in-person training experience are also commonly cited as key benefits:
- “Completing modules online in my own time meant I could retain a lot more than if I had sat in didactic lectures prior.”
- “Reduce need for didactic learning. F2F is condensed but more impactful.”
- “I think that went well – online modules were great because self-paced. Allowed me to absorb the information before the course. The online modules were better than a paper handbook.”
- Good mix of theory allowing more hands on practice.
- The online learning was very thorough and relevant, helped a lot with the practical part of the day
The above feedback is taken verbatim from course participant evaluation forms.
