Resuscitation Australia places strong emphasis on the role of the Course Director in the delivery of Advanced Life Support (ALS) courses. While Resuscitation Australia does not issue or confer a specific credential for Course Directors, every ALS course delivered under our accreditation must have a Course Director appointed by the Accredited Course Centre (ACC) responsible for facilitating the course.
This approach underscores our commitment to both quality assurance and respect for the autonomy of our Accredited Course Centres.
Why Course Direction Matters
The Course Director is pivotal to ensuring the smooth and compliant delivery of an ALS course. Appointed by the Course Centre, the Course Director is:
-
The accountable lead for ensuring the course is delivered in full alignment with Resuscitation Australia’s published curriculum and program standards.
-
The central point of coordination, bringing together accredited Faculty, allocating teaching and assessment responsibilities, and supporting access to required resources.
-
The ultimate assessor of outcomes, ensuring participant results are defensible, evidence-based, and recorded accurately.
-
The quality guardian, reviewing participant feedback, Faculty reflections, and course documentation to support continuous improvement.
This ensures that every course delivered under Resuscitation Australia’s accreditation maintains the same integrity, fairness, and high educational standards across the country.

Practical Benefits for Course Centres
By making the role of Course Director a Course Centre appointed role, Resuscitation Australia ensures that:
-
Local flexibility is preserved — ACCs can appoint a Course Director best suited to their operational needs, workforce mix, and environment.
-
Governance remains clear — the Course Director is directly accountable to the Course Centre and Resuscitation Australia, avoiding duplication of processes and ensuring clarity of responsibility on the course day.
-
Course integrity is protected — the Course Director’s oversight ensures that assessment is fair, documentation is accurate, and participant outcomes are defensible.
-
Quality improvement is embedded — participant evaluations and faculty feedback can be acted upon locally, supporting a culture of continuous improvement within each Accredited Course Centre.
This model balances national consistency in ALS delivery with local autonomy in governance and leadership.
In Summary
Resuscitation Australia’s policy on course direction highlights our partnership approach: we set the standards, and Course Centres appoint the leadership. This model empowers Course Centres, strengthens governance, and ensures ALS training is delivered to the highest standard across Australia.
